Alex O’Loughlin – An Actor’s Actor

This is, as the old “Phantom” comic strip used to say, for those who came in late. You may have just discovered Alex as Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-0 or just noticed the fantastic looking guy on the cover of “Men’s Fitness”. To my comrades who’ve been Alex fans since “Moonlight” or earlier, I’m preaching to the choir.  But, to the rest of you, I say, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Listen up.

We all have our favorite actors. In fact, sometimes we watch them no matter what role they are playing. We are going to watch the actor, not the character. I believe Alex takes his acting a step beyond. When he acts, I feel like I’m watching the character, not the actor.  So, here’s my suggestion. Backtrack a bit. Compare some of his roles that have become fan favorites.  Watch Moonlight episodes. You can often find them in marathons on cable.  If you can get them, check out “The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant” or even “Feed” if you’re daring. One of my favorite roles is Vincent in “The Big Wheel” of “Criminal Minds”.  Believe me, you’ve never seen a serial killer like Vincent.  A crew member viewing the dailies was overheard to remark “this guy’s good”.  And so he is.  When all is said and done and the final curtain drawn, I firmly believe Alex will be known as one of our finest and most talented actors .  Check him out. You’ll be glad you did.
